When
Joe Henshaw began his coal round with a single truck back in the 1970's, little did he
realise how his business empire would flourish over the next 24 years. |
|
|
It
is all a far cry from C.F.M. Henshaw's "cosy fireside shop" at Hibel Road which
Joe used as his business headquarters in the 1980's after starting his coal round in 1976.
The timber shed heated by a solid fuel stove provided the complete fireside service
selling pre-packed coal, logs and many accessories including shovels, bunkers, sticks,
firelighters and grates. Joe's
proud boast that orders would be fulfilled within 24 hours became reality as he worked
hard to meet deadlines and attracted more and more customers. |
| As
the business grew and more wagons were used to carry the fuel, Joe insisted on maintaining
his vehicles to the highest standard so they would not let his customers down and this
philosophy is continued today throughout the entire fleet of Henshaw trucks, cars, vans
and pick-ups. |

In
1988 Joe began his waste disposal business with mini, maxi, midi and ro-ro skips for hire
throughout the Macclesfield borough. He bought and took over a number of skip hire firms
and this side of the business rapidly expanded, culminating in Henshaws Envirocare Ltd becoming a licensed waste transfer station,
carriers of waste and recycling plant. They offer daily collection of waste from business
premises including shops, offices, restaurants and pubs. They are open seven days a week
including bank holidays and pay top prices for cars and scrap metal, ferrous and non
ferrous. The business also sells car spares, manuals etc. |
The
third arm of the business, Moss Lane Garage Body Repair Centre was begun in the 1990's and
with a low bake oven on the premises, specialises in high quality car and van body
repairs. It is an MoT testing centre and also carries out mechanical repairs and
servicing. |
|
|
Henshaws
sponsor a V8 and Formula 1 stock car racing team, made up of Joes son Lee (driver)
and mechanics Steve Grant, Steve Cooke and Brian Williams. In 1999, their first year of
racing, Lee and his team won the Track Trophy and came 2nd in points at High
Edge Raceway, Buxton. Lee also won New Driver of the Year at Buxton and
gained the Superstar award (red with flashing lights). The team has raced at meetings all
over the country including Skegness, Coventry, Stoke, Norfolk and Swindon and they have
already won 30 trophies. |
| His
stock car is a 3500 V8 Rover with a Transit front axle, Sherpa back axle and a ZF gearbox
out of a CF Bedford. The car is capable of achieving 240 bhp. Joe Henshaw believes that "quality counts" and insists on using and selling top quality products. He is also a firm supporter of keeping business within the town and using local firms wherever possible. He also believes in employing local people and is an equal opportunities employer. |
|
Chris Andrew |
Joe
is proud of his staff and pays tribute to Chris Andrew, manager of his waste management
business and Les Dawson who manages Moss Lane Garage. Sandra Henshaw shares the office and
administration work with Chris. Joe's son Lee also works in the waste management side of
the company. Members of the Henshaw team include Mick, Dek, Roger, Steve, Trevor, and Hero (skips); Lisa Henshaw (new driver); Lee, Andrew, and Lee 2 (yard); Dirk, Brian, Cookie and Les (mechanics); Anthony and Kenny (handymen) and Tony (electrician). |
| The
team would not be complete unless mention were made of Joe and Sandra's two
"Westies" and a Cairn, Max, Scrap and Binner. Joe
Henshaw is a hands-on employer and would not dream of asking someone to do a job that he
would not do himself. He may be seen unloading or filling a skip, carrying a sack of coal,
wrestling with a truck engine or simply answering a phone call in the office. He is a
great all-rounder and his firm's success is a tribute to his own hard work and sheer
determination to make a difference. |
